LOS ANGELES — Christen Press, a two-time winner of the Women’s World Cup, has officially re-signed with Angel City FC, as announced by the National Women’s Soccer League team on Friday.
Press, who was the first player to be signed by Angel City ahead of its inaugural season in 2022, has agreed to a one-year contract as a free agent for the upcoming season. This decision follows her recovery from a significant knee injury she sustained last year.
In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Press remarked, “LA, it was always you.”
At 36 years old, Press played a pivotal role on the U.S. national team during its victories at the Women’s World Cup in both 2015 and 2019, as well as securing a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Over her career, she has participated in 155 matches for the national team, netting 64 goals and providing 43 assists.
During the inaugural season of Angel City, Press scored two goals over eight matches before a severe right knee injury caused by an ACL tear sidelined her. After undergoing four surgeries, she returned to the pitch last season, featuring in nine games.
In a statement released by the team, Press expressed her excitement about her role in the community: “This city’s strength and resilience inspires me, and I could not be more proud to represent L.A., my home city, when I step out onto the pitch this season. To this community of fans, your love and support has gotten me through a lot, we’ve been through a lot together and I could not be more excited to journey with you for another season.”
Moreover, Press co-hosts a popular YouTube series focusing on women’s soccer called The RE-CAP Show along with fellow two-time World Cup champion Tobin Heath.
