DETROIT — Steve Kerr, the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, revealed that his 90-year-old mother is among the many who have been displaced by devastating wildfires currently impacting the Los Angeles region.

“My mother is in a safe place, but her home is no longer standing,” Kerr shared on Thursday evening prior to the Warriors’ match against the Detroit Pistons. “I’ve been in regular contact with my siblings during this time.”

Kerr mentioned that his mother, Ann, evacuated her residence in Pacific Palisades following the issuance of evacuation orders earlier in the week.

“That’s where I grew up,” he noted. “Almost everyone from my school has lost their family homes—the places where we grew up. Our high school has been destroyed. It feels like the entire town has been erased. It’s both surreal and heartbreaking.”

He expressed gratitude that most residents managed to escape the flames but emphasized the daunting challenge of rebuilding the community of Pacific Palisades. “It’s hard to believe how they will come back and restore it to a lively community again. The extent of the damage is truly shocking.”

Pacific Palisades lies neighboring Malibu, situated about 20 miles west of downtown Los Angeles. The neighborhood features steep streets lined with closely packed homes and meandering roads that lead from the Santa Monica Mountains down to the serene beaches along the Pacific Ocean.

The wildfires are spreading rapidly, consuming homes and businesses as approximately 180,000 residents evacuate from neighborhoods often frequented by celebrities, engulfed in thick smoke and flames.

The intense fires, which flared up on Tuesday, remained uncontained by Thursday, propelled by strong Santa Ana winds.

Tragically, at least five individuals have lost their lives in the chaos, with thousands of buildings either damaged or completely destroyed.
