Maple Leafs secure 2-1 victory against Islanders with strong performances from McMann and Woll

NEW YORK — Bobby McMann had an impressive performance, scoring two goals, including the decisive one late in the third period, leading the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday night.

Joseph Woll showcased his skills by turning aside 32 shots, allowing the Maple Leafs to claim their second win against the Islanders this week and their third victory in the past four games.

Scott Mayfield found the net for New York, while goaltender Ilya Sorokin recorded 29 saves, resulting in the Islanders suffering their third consecutive defeat.

In a critical moment, Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech was penalized for tripping, which provided the Maple Leafs with a power play opportunity that McMann exploited to secure the winning goal with only 2:59 left in the game.

As the game drew to a close, the Islanders intensified their efforts to equalize, but Woll successfully maintained the lead for the Maple Leafs.

McMann kicked off the scoring at 10:43 of the second period, and just before the end of the period, Mayfield managed to equalize with 1:45 remaining.

Injury note: Twenty-year-old defenseman Isaiah George had to exit the game in the second period after receiving an elbow from Max Domi and did not return to play.

In a notable subplot, Toronto assistant coach Lane Lambert made his first appearance back at UBS Arena since his dismissal by the Islanders on January 20, 2024. Lambert joined the New York coaching staff with Barry Trotz in 2018 and took over as head coach after Trotz was let go in 2022.

A significant moment that shifted momentum occurred when Mitch Marner lent his right-handed stick to left-handed defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson after Ekman-Larsson’s stick broke. However, the defensive player struggled to maintain control and cleared the puck from the defensive zone, resulting in a turnover that concluded with the Islanders scoring their equalizer late in the second period.

A disturbing statistic for the Islanders is that they have allowed the opening goal in 12 of their last 14 games, leading to a record of 5-8-1 during that stretch.

Looking ahead, the Maple Leafs will host the Boston Bruins on Saturday, marking the start of a two-game homestand, while the Islanders are set to visit Boston on Sunday to begin a three-game road trip.
