DENVER — A reward of $10,000 is being offered by the FBI for information that could lead to the capture of a man accused of fatally shooting a 7-year-old boy on a tribal reservation in Colorado earlier this month.
The FBI made this announcement regarding the reward on Monday, in hopes of finding Jeremiah Hight, aged 23, who is wanted in connection with the shooting that occurred on December 11 at a residence located in Towaoc on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation.
The investigation into this serious crime falls under the jurisdiction of the FBI, which deals with major offenses on the reservation situated in the Four Corners area, where the states of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado converge. Hight, who is a member of the Ute Mountain Ute tribe, was charged with murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and discharging a firearm during a violent crime, leading to the issuance of a sealed arrest warrant on Thursday.
Details surrounding the events leading up to the tragic shooting have not been disclosed, and the FBI’s wanted poster indicates that the shooting was aimed at a residence.
The young boy who lost his life has been named as Zamias Lang, as confirmed by Montezuma County coroner George Deavers on Tuesday.
In remembrance of Zamias, an online fundraiser has been set up to help cover his funeral expenses, with descriptions of the boy portraying him as a “bright and loving” child.
Following the incident, tribal chairman Manuel Heart expressed his condolences in a video message, calling the act “senseless.” He encouraged community members to refrain from taking matters into their own hands and to allow law enforcement to carry out their investigation properly. The chairman also mentioned he is in the process of proposing a resolution to the federal government aimed at increasing police presence on the reservation, along with another proposal to prohibit shooting in the two communities on the reservation, namely Towaoc and White Mesa, Utah.
“We are not going to tolerate any more events where someone is shot,” he stated firmly.
