Stony Brook, N.Y. — In a closely contested matchup, Joseph Octave delivered an impressive performance with 24 points, guiding Stony Brook to a narrow 74-72 victory over Maine on Saturday.
Octave’s contribution didn’t end with his scoring; he also secured five rebounds for the Seawolves, who improved their record to 4-8. Ben Wight proved to be another key player, shooting 4 of 7 from the field and a perfect 3 for 3 from the free-throw line, finishing the game with 11 points. CJ Luster II also added 11 points to the scoreboard, achieving 3 of 8 shooting from the field, including 2 of 5 from beyond the arc, while also converting all three of his free-throw attempts.
On the other side, Kellen Tynes was the standout performer for the Black Bears, scoring 15 points and contributing four assists, four steals, and two block shots. His teammate Jaden Clayton also scored 15 points while notching four assists and three steals. AJ Lopez rounded out the scoring for Maine with 13 points and four assists.
Stony Brook went into the half with a slight edge, leading Maine 34-30, largely credited to Octave’s 10 points in the first half. The second half saw Octave continue to shine, adding 14 more points. Despite being outscored by two points in the final half, Stony Brook managed to maintain their lead and secure the win.
Looking ahead, both teams will return to the court on Sunday, with Stony Brook set to challenge Albany (NY) while Maine will host Boston University.
