This initiative aimed to prevent a partial shutdown of the federal government.
Following Musk’s online pressure, the political landscape in Washington shifted dramatically. Initially, Trump hesitated to express confidence in Johnson, but later praised him for securing “a very good deal” alongside House leadership, after the two announced a revamped plan for government funding and raising the debt ceiling.
Prior to this new development, Democrats in Congress were quick to ridicule their Republican colleagues, insinuating that Trump had become less relevant. Democratic Representative Robert Garcia from California humorously remarked on X about entering “the Elon Musk presidency.”
Musk’s rise as a political figure has become evident, leveraging his immense wealth and media presence. As the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, he wields considerable influence, especially among Republicans aligned with Trump. Chris Pack, a former communications director for key Republican committees, acknowledged Musk’s sway, noting the potential risks his threats pose for House Republicans, who currently lead by a slim five-seat margin that may be further diminished due to Trump’s nominations of GOP members to administrative roles.

During the annual AmericaFest gathering in Phoenix, conservative activists rallied behind Musk, musing about the idea of him potentially succeeding Speaker Johnson, as there are no formal requirements dictating that the Speaker of the House must be an elected member. A conservative media host’s provocative question about Musk taking on the speaker role was met with enthusiastic approval from the audience. Johnson, originally slated to attend AmericaFest, canceled after the budget proposal was thwarted.
