In a thrilling matchup on Thursday night, Saint Mary’s College (CA) edged out Merrimack with a score of 73-68, thanks in-part to a standout performance by Mitchell Saxen, who recorded 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Gaels, whose record now stands at 10-2.
Alongside Saxen, Paulius Murauskas matched the scoring output, registering 18 points while shooting 5 of 10 from the floor and an impressive 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. Murauskas also added 11 rebounds and demonstrated his defensive prowess with three steals. Augustas Marciulionis contributed significantly to the win as well, scoring 16 points, with six made baskets including two 3-pointers and converting two of his three free-throw attempts.
For the Merrimack Warriors, who now have an overall record of 5-8 and hold a 2-0 standing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Sean Trumper played a crucial role, finishing the game with 13 points and four assists. Adam Clark complemented the efforts with 12 points and eight assists, while teammate Matt Becht also contributed 12 points to the scoring efforts.
The first half saw Murauskas stepping up early, contributing 12 of his points to secure a 32-26 lead at halftime for Saint Mary’s. In the second half, Marciulionis exploded for 16 points, helping to ensure the Gaels’ victory by a narrow five-point margin.
