CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers will be missing forward Isaac Okoro for several weeks due to a sprained right shoulder.
The Cavaliers, who currently hold the best record in the NBA at 23-4, announced on Thursday that Okoro suffered an injury to his right AC joint during the third quarter of their recent victory against Brooklyn on December 16.
He is set to be re-evaluated in two weeks, and the organization will provide updates regarding his condition and potential return as necessary.
Okoro is regarded as one of the team’s top defensive assets and has significantly improved his offensive contributions this season.
Throughout 23 games, he is recording an average of 6.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 21 minutes of play per game, with 16 of those being starts.
Selected as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 draft, Okoro has dedicated himself to enhancing his outside shooting and has made impressive strides.
This season, he is enjoying a career-high shooting percentage of 49% from beyond the arc.
In September, Okoro, who was an unrestricted free agent last summer, agreed to a three-year contract worth $38 million to remain with the Cavaliers.
While he will be missed in the lineup for the time being, small forward Max Strus is nearing his season debut after recovering from a significant ankle injury incurred during a preseason workout.
Strus has been participating in practices over the last two weeks, and his return was anticipated last week before it was postponed.
On Wednesday, first-year head coach Kenny Atkinson remarked that Strus is “awfully close” to making his return.
Last season, Strus averaged 12.2 points and 4.8 rebounds in 70 starts for the Cavaliers, following three prior seasons with the Miami Heat.
The Cavaliers are scheduled to face the Milwaukee Bucks, who recently secured their second NBA Cup earlier this week, on Friday, followed by a matchup against Philadelphia on Saturday.
