NEW YORK — Who could outwork Questlove? The Academy Award-winning artist has collaborated with Emmy-winning director Oz Rodriguez and NBC to create a new film titled “Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music,” which commemorates half a century of the iconic show and highlights its unforgettable live musical performances.
This extensive three-hour special includes a variety of sketches and performances as well as interviews with more than 50 notable figures from the music industry, such as Bad Bunny, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Mick Jagger, Dua Lipa, Darryl DMC McDaniels, Tom Morello, Kacey Musgraves, Olivia Rodrigo, Paul Simon, Chris Stapleton, and Justin Timberlake.
Questlove expressed his enthusiasm in a statement, noting, “Most people are familiar with the legendary ‘SNL’ performances, such as those by Elvis Costello, Prince, or the Beastie Boys, but that’s only a glimpse of what lies beneath the surface.” He added, “Revisiting the incredible archival footage felt like a journey through time, much like a ride in a DeLorean or similar. I am thrilled that I could take this trip and share the experience with everyone.”
Recently, it was revealed that his new documentary, “SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius),” which focuses on the impact of Sly & The Family Stone, will be showcased at next year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Questlove’s directorial debut, “Summer of Soul,” which highlights the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, won him an Academy Award. He is also the frontman for The Roots, who regularly perform on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” In addition, he will release a new book titled “Hip-Hop Is History” in 2024.
The special “Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music” is set to air live on NBC on January 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, and it will be available for streaming on Peacock the following day.
