AMIS, Iowa — Matt Campbell, who made history by guiding Iowa State to its inaugural 10-win season, has secured an eight-year contract extension, keeping him at the helm of the Cyclones through 2032.
The announcement was made by university president Wendy Wintersteen and athletic director Jamie Pollard on Wednesday, just a few days following the Cyclones’ defeat to Arizona State in the Big 12 Championship Game.
Pollard emphasized the importance of quick action amidst the uncertainties in college athletics, stating, “It was critical that we moved quickly to solidify the future of our football program. Matt is the ideal choice for Iowa State University, and I am excited that he wants to continue leading our program. Consistency in leadership is vital to the long-term success of any organization.”
The Cyclones kicked off the season with seven consecutive wins, marking their best start since 1938. They currently hold a record of 10-3 and are set to face Miami in the Pop Tarts Bowl in Orlando, Florida, on December 28.
In his nine seasons, Campbell holds a record of 63-51 and surpassed Dan McCarney to become the all-time wins leader for the program with a 20-0 victory over Houston in September. Under his leadership, Iowa State achieved a four-way tie for first place in the Big 12 and reached the conference championship game for the second time in five years.
Details regarding the specific terms of Campbell’s contract will be released at a later date.
Expressing his gratitude, Campbell stated, “I am honored to be part of this great university and community, and I am thankful to collaborate with such outstanding leaders, administrators, and student-athletes. I look forward to finishing the 2024 season strongly while continuing to advance this program and striving for excellence in both academics and athletics.”
Campbell stands out as the only Iowa State coach to have achieved five consecutive winning seasons from 2017 to 2021, and he has guided the Cyclones to seven winning conference records in eight seasons.
