BRUSSELS — Reports from Belgian media indicate that renowned cyclist Eddy Merckx has suffered a broken hip due to an accident while cycling.
According to Het Nieuwsblad, which cited information from his family, the 79-year-old cycling legend is scheduled to undergo surgery at a hospital in Herentals. Other media outlets across Belgium have also confirmed details regarding Merckx’s unfortunate incident.
Celebrated as a three-time world champion, Merckx is widely recognized as one of the greatest cyclists in the history of the sport. His remarkable achievements include five victories in the prestigious Tour de France.
Known by the nickname “The Cannibal” due to his relentless pursuit of victory, Merckx’s impressive resume boasts five Giro d’Italia titles, one Spanish Vuelta, and numerous one-day races, encompassing all five of the iconic Monument classics.
