ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In a competitive matchup on Wednesday evening, Donovan Dent showcased his skills by scoring 20 points to lead New Mexico to an 83-77 victory against San Jose State.
The Lobos improved their record to 7-2 and claimed their first win in the Mountain West Conference, now standing at 1-0 in league play. Alongside Dent’s performance, Mustapha Amzil made a significant impact with his 19 points, completing 6 of 12 shots from the field, which included a single 3-pointer out of three attempts, and he also excelled at the free-throw line, hitting 6 of 9 attempts. Amzil contributed to the team’s effort by grabbing nine rebounds as well. Nelly Junior Joseph added to the scoring, finishing with 16 points on an efficient 5 of 11 shooting, while converting all of his six free-throw attempts.
For the Spartans, who now hold an overall record of 4-6 and are 0-1 in conference play, Josh Uduje led the team with 22 points and also came away with three steals. Will McClendon supported the effort with 20 points of his own, demonstrating the strength of the San Jose State offense. Additionally, Robert Vaihola had a solid performance with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks, helping anchor the defense.
Entering halftime, New Mexico held a narrow lead over San Jose State, with a score of 39-38. Joseph played a key role in the first half, contributing 12 points, while Dent came alive in the second half, scoring 18 points to propel New Mexico to a crucial six-point victory.
