HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Medrick Burnett Jr., a linebacker for Alabama A&M, is currently hospitalized due to a head injury he sustained during a game in late October. This comes after an earlier announcement by the school indicated that he had passed away.
The athletic department issued a correction on Wednesday regarding Burnett’s condition, explaining that the initial report of his death stemmed from a statement made by an immediate family member on Tuesday evening. The subsequent message clarified, “Our staff acted in accordance with the family member’s wishes to inform the A&M community and others about this tragic news.” It continued, “However, we received information from a representative at UAB Hospital this afternoon, confirming that he is still alive.”
The athletic department expressed their regret for spreading inaccurate information, yet conveyed relief upon learning that Medrick remains in stable condition. They stated, “We express our immediate regret for disseminating false information. However, we hold complete joy in knowing that Medrick remains in stable condition.”
In the wake of this situation, a message shared on the GoFundMe page dedicated to Burnett echoed a plea for prayers and support. It read, “Please pray he is having a tough time but we are holding on till the very end. God give us strength so we can keep the faith.”
Burnett, a redshirt freshman from Lakewood, California, joined the Alabama A&M team over the summer following a stint at Grambling State. So far this season, he has participated in seven games, recording five tackles, with three of those against Austin Peay.
