Teenage sensation Linda Caicedo displayed her remarkable dribbling skills against the Twente defense on Wednesday, playing a pivotal role in securing Real Madrid’s advancement to the quarterfinals of the Women’s Champions League.
The Colombian star, who made headlines during the 2023 World Cup, netted a goal in first-half stoppage time and assisted Signe Bruun in the 71st minute, contributing to a 3-2 victory. This win came just a week after Madrid delivered a stunning 7-0 performance against Twente at their home ground.
Following this match, Madrid now finds itself six points clear of Twente after four matches in the group stage. The team’s spot in the knockout rounds would be solidified later on if Chelsea, currently leading Group B, managed to avoid a loss against Celtic, who sits at the bottom of the table.
While Caicedo shone brightly in the Netherlands, German football legend Alexandra Popp showcased her remarkable talent by scoring three goals and providing two assists leading Wolfsburg to a dominant 5-0 victory over Galatasaray.
Wolfsburg, which also achieved a 5-0 triumph in their encounter in Istanbul the previous week, is now sharing the lead in points with second-place Roma, who were set to face Lyon later; Lyon is the group leader and an eight-time champion of the Women’s Champions League.
In the opening half of the match, Real Madrid faced challenges from Twente, which took an early lead in the 29th minute when Jaimy Ravensbergen converted a free kick sent into the box by Alieke Tuin.
However, Caicedo shifted the momentum just before halftime by capping off a move she initiated with a strong run into the penalty area. Her initial shot was saved, but after a deflection, she calmly found the net from close range.
In the 71st minute, as Caicedo pressed forward against the Twente defenders, she created the opportunity for a low cross that Bruun capitalized on to score.
The match was sealed for Madrid during stoppage time, when Alba Redondo broke free to add another goal; however, Twente managed to reduce the deficit with a remarkable long-range effort from Sophie Te Brake just before the final whistle.
Wolfsburg’s victory came easy, with Popp scoring in the 3rd, 15th, and 88th minutes with a low shot and two headers. Additionally, she played a key role in directing plays that allowed Janina Minge to score from outside the penalty area in the 31st minute and set up Lena Lattwein to finish with a header during the dying moments of the game.
