A man in New York, who became well-known for raising an orphaned squirrel that gained popularity on social media, expressed his determination on Saturday to challenge the state’s decision to seize and euthanize the animal. Mark Longo stated in a phone conversation, “We will make a stance on how this government and New York state utilizes their resources.”

Although he did not disclose his future plans, Longo mentioned that he would be taking action regarding the fate of the squirrel, Peanut, and also Fred, a raccoon he rescued, both of which were taken and euthanized by state officials.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) removed the animals from Longo’s home and animal sanctuary in Pine City on Wednesday, following complaints about the illegal and potentially unsafe keeping of wildlife. According to the law, individuals must obtain a license to own wild animals. Despite this, Longo claimed he was in the process of certifying Peanut, sometimes referred to as P’Nut or PNUT, as an educational animal.

On Friday, the DEC and Chemung County Health Department announced that the squirrel and raccoon had been euthanized for rabies testing after Peanut reportedly bit someone involved in the investigation. Longo, however, asserted that he did not witness Peanut bite anyone amidst what he described as an extended and aggressive search by authorities. He mentioned that officials had not contacted him since their visit.

“This still feels surreal; that the state I live in has targeted me and taken two of the most beloved animals away without even quarantining them,” he lamented.

Longo shared that he began caring for Peanut seven years ago after the squirrel’s mother was killed in a car accident in New York City. Peanut captured the hearts of countless social media followers on Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms, often seen wearing tiny hats, performing tricks, and enjoying waffles.

Additionally, Fred the raccoon arrived at Longo’s doorstep a few months back, and after nursing the animal back to health, he and his wife intended to release him back into the wild.
