NEWARK, N.J. — A heartfelt memorial service was held on Thursday to celebrate the life of Cissy Houston, a revered figure in gospel music, in her hometown of Newark. The event took place at New Hope Baptist Church, where Houston had long been a cherished member and choir leader. This same church was previously the site of her daughter Whitney Houston’s funeral over a decade ago. The ambiance was enhanced with numerous framed photographs honoring Houston’s life, and her coffin was positioned prominently in front of the pulpit.

Among those paying tribute was Dionne Warwick, Houston’s niece, who reflected on the profound influence her aunt had on her life. “She gave so much. She gave me the right to be me,” said Warwick, 83. “Cissy, I’m going to miss you.” Cissy Houston, a Grammy-winning artist celebrated for her contributions to soul and gospel music, passed away on October 7.

The ceremony featured a powerful portrayal of Houston, highlighting her strong faith, love, and unique ability to express herself without uttering a single word. BeBe Winans recounted her fierce nature, humorously noting, “No one else could cut you in Jesus’ name,” drawing laughter from the attendees. He further shared a poignant memory of Houston’s compassion, recalling a time when she reached out to him following Whitney’s passing, saying, “I’m just calling to check on you.” He emphasized that her strength in that moment provided him with solace.

Newark’s Mayor, Ras Baraka, honored Houston with a special proclamation, while Governor Phil Murphy praised her as a “musical legend” who represented the very essence of New Jersey. “While each one of us are born with a voice, only a select few of us are endowed with a voice that is powerful enough to reach into the hearts of millions and millions of listeners around the world, a voice that is powerful enough to soothe the pain of heartbreak or to carry the euphoria of falling in love,” the governor remarked, underscoring Houston’s remarkable influence on music and culture.
