Jacob Stallings’ single in the sixth inning drove in the deciding run as the Colorado Rockies defeated the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Sunday. The victory secured Colorado’s series win against the Padres with an 8-5 record, snapping San Diego’s eight-series winning streak. Manny Machado’s homer was not enough for the Padres, who have a 20-6 record in the second half of the season, with four of their losses coming against the two worst National League teams: Colorado and Miami.
Angel Chivilli secured the win for the Rockies in relief, while Victor Vodnik earned his ninth save despite walking a batter in the ninth inning. Padres’ right-hander Joe Musgrove, in his second start since returning from the injured list, achieved his 1,000th career strikeout in the game.
The San Diego bullpen struggled to keep the game tied after Musgrove and Rockies’ starter Bradley Blalock each allowed a run. Brenton Doyle’s leadoff triple in the sixth set up Stallings’ go-ahead single. An error by right fielder David Peralta allowed the Rockies to extend their lead to 3-1 in the inning.
Padres’ Machado, fresh off four hits the night before, hit a solo home run in the eighth, the only hit off the Rockies’ bullpen in 3 1/3 innings. Peralta contributed with an RBI double in the fourth inning, while Aaron Schunk doubled home a run for the Rockies in the third.
Injuries affected both teams, with Padres shortstop Ha-Seong Kim leaving the game in the third inning due to a jammed right shoulder. Rockies outfielder Nolan Jones returned from the 10-day injured list, while Hunter Goodman was optioned to Triple-A.
The Padres are set to face the Minnesota Twins in a three-game series at home, while the Rockies will send left-hander Austin Gomber (3-8, 4.82 ERA) to the mound to start a six-game road trip in Washington.
