To Lam, the Vietnamese President, has been officially appointed as the new chief of the Communist Party following the death of his predecessor on July 19. According to state media, Lam will now hold the position of general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, which is considered to be the most influential political role in the country. It is not yet confirmed if Lam will continue his duties as the president alongside this new role.
The former general secretary, Nguyen Phu Trong, had a significant impact on Vietnamese politics since taking office in 2011. Trong, who was re-elected for a third term in 2021, was known for his strong views on combatting corruption within the party, which he considered to be a severe threat. Lam, having served more than forty years in the Ministry of Public Security before becoming a minister in 2016, played a crucial role in Trong’s extensive anti-corruption efforts.
Lam was actively involved in leading the anti-graft campaign until May of this year when he was appointed as the president following the resignation of his predecessor, who had to step down due to allegations uncovered during the campaign.
