BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — Tragedy struck the city of Binghamton in upstate New York as a dedicated firefighter lost his life while responding to a significant fire in the downtown area. The incident occurred late Wednesday night when a wall unexpectedly collapsed, resulting in the tragic death of 40-year-old Firefighter John R. Gaudet.

Gaudet was declared dead at a nearby hospital following the devastating incident that took place around 9:30 p.m. Two other firefighters present at the scene sustained injuries but have since been treated and released from the hospital, according to statements made by Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham on social media.

A member of the Binghamton Fire Department for over 11 years, Gaudet was remembered for his exceptional bravery and commitment to service. The department honored him on social media, noting his fearless approach to firefighting and his unwavering dedication to his colleagues and the community. “JR embodied what it means to be a firefighter — fearless, dedicated, and always putting others before himself,” the department shared on Facebook. His colleagues described him as someone who would “literally run through a wall” to protect others, making him an invaluable partner in the line of duty.

Investigators are currently looking into the cause of the fire that led to this unfortunate incident.
