Democratic states file lawsuit against Trump administration over directive to stop funding for gender-affirming services

A coalition of three Democratic states took legal action against the Trump administration on Friday over an executive order that intends to cut federal funding for gender-affirming care for individuals under 19 years old.

Washington state’s Attorney General Nick Brown initiated the federal lawsuit in the Washington District Court, with the attorneys generals from Oregon and Minnesota also included as plaintiffs alongside three medical professionals. The lawsuit contends that this executive order constitutes discrimination against transgender individuals.

Last month, Trump issued an executive order mandating that federally funded insurance programs, such as Medicaid and TRICARE—which covers military families—would no longer provide coverage for gender-affirming care. The order instructs the Department of Justice to seek legal actions and legislation to oppose these services.

Currently, some Medicaid programs in various states do cover gender-affirming treatments, but the new directive implies that this may come to an end. The order specifically targets healthcare facilities, including hospitals and universities that benefit from federal funding and offer these essential services.
