KYIV, Ukraine — Disputed narratives have surfaced regarding a tragic attack on a boarding school located in Sudzha, a city in Russia’s Kursk region, which has reportedly been under Ukrainian control for the past five months. Both Ukraine and Russia have accused one another of perpetrating the assault.
On Saturday night, the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported that the strike resulted in the deaths of four individuals, with an additional four suffering serious injuries. Ukrainian servicemen managed to rescue 84 people trapped beneath the debris of the building. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the attack was carried out by Moscow, which targeted the boarding school where civilians were taking refuge in preparation for evacuation.
According to the General Staff, those requiring further medical treatment were swiftly transported to healthcare facilities within Ukraine. In contrast, the Russian Ministry of Defense asserted early Sunday that the missile strike was actually launched by Ukrainian forces, alleging that the missiles originated from the Sumy region of Ukraine.
Simultaneously, local authorities confirmed that the death toll from a previous Russian missile attack on an apartment building in the Ukrainian city of Poltava had risen to 14, which included two children. Seventeen others sustained injuries from the assault that targeted the five-story dwelling, as reported by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
Overnight into Sunday, Moscow reportedly deployed 55 drones into Ukrainian territory, prompting an immediate response from Ukrainian officials. The country’s Air Force indicated that 40 of these drones were intercepted and destroyed during the assault, while an additional 13 drones were presumably lost, likely due to electronic countermeasures.
In the Kharkiv region, two individuals were injured as a result of a drone strike, according to regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov. Meanwhile, in response to these escalating tensions, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that five Ukrainian drones were shot down in various locales across western Russia, including three in the Kursk region and one each in the Belgorod and Bryansk regions.
Tragically, a man lost his life due to a drone strike in the Belgorod region, as confirmed by regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.
