Senator Elizabeth Warren is urging Pete Hegseth, the nominee for Secretary of Defense under President-elect Donald Trump, to address further inquiries regarding his previous actions and comments ahead of his confirmation hearing scheduled for next Tuesday.

In a letter sent to Hegseth on Monday, the Massachusetts Democrat requested that he reply by Friday to questions concerning allegations of past alcohol use, sexual misconduct, and mismanagement of finances within veterans organizations, all of which Hegseth denies. Furthermore, Warren seeks clarification on his views about minorities, women, and LGBTQ individuals serving in the military.

Hegseth has garnered support from certain veteran groups that contend the military has prioritized diversity initiatives at the expense of operational readiness. Next week, a coalition of former Navy SEALs is organizing a rally in Washington to show their backing for Hegseth.

“A major shortcoming in the current military leadership is the excessive focus on non-essential matters,” remarked Bill Brown, a former SEAL leading the rally planned for Tuesday. “The military should not be viewed as a vehicle for social justice.”

Proponents of Hegseth argue that many of the allegations regarding his past conduct are grounded in reports that rely on anonymous sources; however, some concerns relate to his statements made in interviews and writings. In his book “War on Warriors,” Hegseth implied that the promotion of Gen. CQ Brown to the role of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff signified the assumption that “17 percent of all black officers in the Air Force” were promoted due to their appearance rather than their leadership capabilities.

Additionally, Hegseth has publicly criticized the presence of women in combat roles, even though he appeared to soften some of these opinions in discussions with senators.

Warren expressed her apprehensions about Hegseth’s ability to lead, stating she is “deeply concerned by the many ways in which your past behavior and rhetoric indicate that you are unfit to lead the Department of Defense.”

In response, Brian Hughes, a representative of the Trump transition team, commented that Warren’s letter embodies “the precisely the agenda the American electorate rejected on November 5.” He emphasized that the public voted to move away from “woke” policies that have undermined national defense, and instead provided a mandate to strengthen the military, which he believes aligns with Hegseth’s vision for the Department of Defense.
