Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss has revealed he is battling cancer and is on the road to recovery following extensive surgery. Moss shared his health update Friday on Instagram Live, expressing gratitude to his supporters and detailing his treatment journey.
Diagnosis and Major Surgery
Moss, 47, disclosed that doctors found a cancerous mass in his bile duct, located between the pancreas and liver. On Thanksgiving, he underwent an initial procedure to place a stent in his liver, followed by a six-hour surgery to remove the cancer.
The operation, known as a Whipple procedure, involved removing the head of the pancreas, part of the small intestine, the gallbladder, and the bile duct. It is a complex and demanding surgery often used to treat pancreatic or bile duct cancer.
“I didn’t think I would ever be in a position like this, as healthy as I thought I was,” Moss said during his Instagram Live session, where he appeared using a cane.
After spending six days in the hospital, Moss was released on Friday and is now preparing for radiation and chemotherapy as part of his ongoing treatment plan.
Message of Gratitude and Hope
Moss, wearing a hoodie emblazoned with the words “Team Moss,” thanked his family, friends, and “prayer warriors” for their unwavering support during this challenging time.
“All the prayers, the well wishes—I really felt that, and my family felt that,” he said.
Despite the diagnosis, Moss remains optimistic and focused on recovery, expressing his desire to return to his role as an ESPN analyst for Sunday NFL Countdown. Moss stepped away from his position on Dec. 6 but assured fans, “As soon as I get healthy to get back out with the guys, I will be on set. … Hopefully I can be with you guys soon.”

Moss, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018, is widely regarded as one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history. Over 14 seasons, he played for the Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans, and San Francisco 49ers. Moss ranks second in NFL history with 156 touchdown catches and holds the record for the most single-season touchdown receptions (23) during his 2007 season with the Patriots.
