Deportations, drilling and pardons: This is what Donald Trump plans for the first day in the Oval Office

Throughout his campaign, former President Donald Trump outlined an ambitious agenda for his first day back in office, vowing to tackle issues from immigration and energy to education and foreign policy. Key promises include mass deportations, an end to “green new scam” energy policies, and a rapid end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Immigration Overhaul: Mass Deportations

One of Trump’s most prominent promises is a large-scale deportation of immigrants. At an October rally in Madison Square Garden, he declared plans to “launch the largest deportation program in American history,” targeting “criminals” and using both local law enforcement and the National Guard. Senior advisor Jason Miller confirmed that Trump would restore his previous border policies immediately.

Energy Independence: “Drill, Drill, Drill”

Addressing inflation, Trump plans to boost U.S. oil and gas drilling while dismantling clean energy policies. He has pledged to cancel “Kamala’s electric vehicle mandate” and end offshore wind projects, which he argues drive up costs. Miller emphasized that Trump could implement these changes without congressional approval, although repealing regulations will still require time due to federal procedural requirements.

Justice System Shakeup: Firing Jack Smith and Pardoning Jan. 6 Rioters

Trump has repeatedly criticized Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is investigating him for election subversion and mishandling classified documents. Trump pledged to remove Smith within “two seconds” if elected, although legal experts note this may require action through the Department of Justice rather than a direct dismissal. Trump also promised to pardon many Jan. 6 rioters, whom he refers to as “political prisoners,” saying he’d review cases and sign pardons on his first day.

Ending the War in Ukraine

A bold claim on Trump’s agenda is to end the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours, criticizing the Biden administration’s aid to Ukraine. Trump has suggested facilitating negotiations, with Vice President-elect JD Vance proposing a peace deal where Russia keeps seized Ukrainian territories, and Ukraine refrains from joining NATO.

Education Policies: Restricting Critical Race Theory and Transgender Policies

Trump also aims to reform educational policies, promising to end “boys in girls’ sports” and eliminate federal funding for schools teaching “critical race theory.” Though these actions would require congressional support, Trump’s rhetoric signals his intent to push for stricter educational guidelines.

A Packed Agenda with Uncertain Outcomes

Trump’s ‘Day One’ list is extensive, with promises spanning immigration, energy, justice, foreign policy, and education. While some actions could be achieved through executive power, others may require congressional collaboration, leaving questions about how swiftly Trump can enact his vision.
