Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her feelings of “sorrow” regarding Donald Trump’s return to political prominence, discussing the challenges his leadership poses to global unity. In a recent interview with the German publication Der Spiegel, she noted that Trump presents a significant obstacle, particularly in the context of multilateralism. She emphasized that the situation is complicated by the fact that the United States, as the world’s strongest economy, is supporting his presidency, which holds considerable influence due to the dominance of the dollar.
Merkel, who led Germany through four U.S. presidencies during her time in office, referred to Trump’s first term as the peak of tension in German-U.S. relations throughout her 16 years as chancellor, a tenure that wrapped up in late 2021. She recalled a particularly memorable encounter in the Oval Office during her first visit with Trump in March 2017. During this visit, a moment became famous when cameras called out for a handshake. Merkel shared that she discreetly asked Trump if he would like to partake in the handshake, but he remained silent, hands clasped in front of him, looking past her. She characterized the moment as one where she was attempting to create a more collaborative atmosphere, though she acknowledged that his refusal was deliberate.
Despite the tension, Merkel and Trump did manage to shake hands at various moments during her visit. When asked what insights a German chancellor might grasp while dealing with Trump, Merkel highlighted his inquisitive nature, noting that he sought information primarily for his gain, aiming to uncover arguments that would bolster his position while undermining others. According to her, Trump was particularly competitive, a quality that only intensified when multiple people were present. She remarked, “You can’t have a casual chat with him. Every meeting is a competition: you or me.”
Reflecting on Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the November 5 election, Merkel voiced her disappointment, recalling her earlier dismay over Hillary Clinton’s defeat in 2016. She wished for a different result in both instances. Merkel, who is now 70 years old and affiliated with the center-right Christian Democrats, has remained relatively quiet since concluding her term. She is anticipated to publish her memoirs soon, which are likely to delve into her experiences and perspectives further.
