COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — A man has been placed on probation and received a suspended sentence after admitting guilt in the assault of former U.S. Senator Martha McSally while she was jogging along a park in western Iowa.
Dominic Henton, 26, faced legal consequences for his actions during the attack that took place on November 8, 2023.
McSally, who served as a senator from Arizona between 2019 and 2020, detailed the incident in an Instagram video shortly after it occurred. She recounted how a man had been trailing her while she ran along the Missouri River in Council Bluffs. The suspect followed her across a pedestrian bridge and allegedly attempted to grab and grope her. Fortunately, she managed to fend him off and even pursued him into a nearby thicket.
Investigators, aided by security camera footage, quickly identified Henton as her attacker, leading to his arrest the following day in Omaha, Nebraska, just across the river from Council Bluffs.
After entering a guilty plea, Henton was released from jail after spending roughly 90 days in custody. He received a suspended sentence for one year in jail, along with a probation period of two years.
As part of his conditional release, Henton will enter a residential treatment program in Council Bluffs, where he is expected to engage in a treatment course designed for sex offenders, according to Pottawattamie County Attorney Matt Wilber’s statements.
