GRUENHEIDE, GERMANY - MARCH 13: Tesla CEO Elon Musk leaves the Tesla Gigafactory electric car plant as he holds his son X Æ A-XII during a visit on March 13, 2024 near Gruenheide, Germany. Elon Musk, father of 11, has reportedly bought two large properties in Austin, Texas, totaling $35 million, to establish a private family compound. The two adjacent homes, featuring a 14,400-square-foot mansion and a six-bedroom residence, are part of Musk’s plan to bring some of his children and two of their mothers under one roof. The homes are within walking distance, with Musk recently adding a third nearby property to the setup.

Plans for a family-centric retreat

Currently, Shivon Zilis, mother to three of Musk’s children, has moved into the compound. Grimes, the mother of three more of Musk’s children, had been living with him in Austin but recently moved out following a custody dispute. His first wife, Justine Musk, who shares five children with him, does not reside in the compound either.

Musk’s private life has drawn media attention, particularly for his open stance on population growth and his past offers of sperm donation, including one to Nicole Shanahan, ex-wife of Sergey Brin. Reports suggest Musk’s aspirations for a centralized family compound are part of his vision for more familial togetherness, despite ongoing custody issues and past disagreements between Zilis and Grimes.

With properties bought at a premium and under strict nondisclosure agreements, Musk appears committed to his vision for a family hub where his children can grow up close. The tech mogul continues to build the compound while balancing relationships with his children’s mothers and navigating his own evolving family story.
