Several Republicans distance themselves from Trump’s criticism of Harris as ‘mentally disabled’

Amidst Donald Trump’s latest verbal attacks towards Democratic nominee Kamala Harris at a rally in Wisconsin, Republicans have begun to distance themselves from his inflammatory comments. The President, during a speech on immigration, referred to Harris as “mentally disabled,” intensifying his personal assaults on the vice president following her visit to the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump’s derogatory remarks, including false claims and insults towards Harris, have prompted concerns from his allies just weeks before the presidential election.

Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina suggested focusing on policy issues rather than personal attacks, emphasizing that the priority should be highlighting how Harris’ policies are detrimental to the country. Similarly, Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota refrained from directly addressing Trump’s disparaging comments, casting doubt on Harris’ suitability for office and underscoring a need to stick to discussing substantive matters such as the economy and immigration reform.

As the first woman, Black woman, and person of South Asian descent to potentially hold the office of the President, Kamala Harris has not responded directly to Trump’s recent insults. However, in previous instances when asked about similar remarks, she criticized the lack of substance in Trump’s attacks, referring to them as the “same old show” with no tangible plans to address the needs of the American people. Despite Trump’s claim of being “entitled” to personally attack Harris due to his grievances towards her actions, many within the Republican party are advocating for a shift towards policy-focused discourse in the lead-up to the election.

The tension between the Trump camp and some Republican leaders underscores a broader division within the party regarding campaign strategies and messaging. With the election drawing closer, the focus on personal attacks versus policy debates appears to be a point of contention among GOP members as they navigate the final stretch of the presidential race. Trump’s inflammatory language towards his political opponents continues to draw criticism and internal strife within the party, highlighting the challenges faced in unifying messaging and support as Election Day approaches.
