Gunshots were heard in the vicinity of former President Donald Trump on Sunday afternoon, while he was golfing at his West Palm Beach golf club in Florida, sources report. U.S. Secret Service agents fired their weapons after spotting an individual carrying a firearm near Trump, but no injuries were reported. The person fled the scene in an SUV but was later apprehended by local law enforcement.
It remains unclear if the gunshots were directed at Trump specifically, and the Secret Service is currently investigating the incident that occurred just before 2 p.m. The Secret Service confirmed that the former president is safe. This event comes about two months after Trump was targeted during an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, where he sustained a minor injury.
Law enforcement officials recovered an AK-style firearm at the scene near Trump’s golf course, according to two anonymous sources familiar with the ongoing investigation. The incident led to a partial closure of the golf course as agents, who were a few holes ahead of Trump, noticed the person with the firearm pushing the rifle through a fence before taking action.
Trump reassured his supporters of his safety in an email, stating, “There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL! Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!” Meanwhile, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office indicated that a suspect believed to be linked to the shooting was in custody after being stopped on Interstate 95.
Senator Lindsey Graham communicated that Trump was in “good spirits” following the incident. The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the situation and expressed relief at knowing Trump was unharmed. The White House mentioned that they would receive updates on the ongoing investigation.
