The Edmonton Oilers recently finalized an eight-year contract extension worth $112 million with Leon Draisaitl, making him the highest-paid player in NHL history with a $14 million salary cap hit. The agreement will come into effect starting from the 2025-26 season and will last until 2033, as announced by General Manager Stan Bowman on Tuesday.
Bowman expressed his excitement, stating, “This is a monumental day for the Edmonton Oilers. Leon’s dedication to our team, city, and fans is immeasurable. His ultimate goal of bringing a Stanley Cup victory to Edmonton is at the core of everything he does on and off the ice.” Draisaitl, alongside Connor McDavid, played a pivotal role in leading the team to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals last season. Draisaitl, the league’s MVP in 2020, was on track to become an unrestricted free agent next year.
Securing Draisaitl for the long term was a top priority for the Oilers during the off-season. Attention may now turn to signing McDavid to an extension by next July.
