Ukraine’s First Lady Aims to Inspire Youth as ‘Generation of Winners,’ Not Victims of War

Ukraine’s first lady, Olena Zelenska, is dedicated to shaping the perspective of Ukrainian children amid the ongoing war, encouraging them to see themselves as a generation of winners rather than mere survivors. In a recent visit to a rehabilitation camp for Ukrainian children in Uzhhorod, Zelenska emphasized the importance of supporting the younger generation as a moral obligation and strategic priority for Ukraine’s future.

Organized by the foundation named after her, funded by foreign donations, in collaboration with Voices of the Children charity, the camp aims to address the prevalent issue of post-traumatic stress disorder among Ukrainian children. A study conducted by the Olena Zelenska Foundation and the Kyiv School of Economics revealed that 44% of Ukrainian children exhibit signs of trauma due to the ongoing conflict.

Zelenska, casually dressed, actively participated in the camp’s activities alongside the children, underscoring her commitment to engaging with and supporting those affected by the war. Despite the challenging circumstances, Zelenska remains hopeful, stressing the importance of swift action and international cooperation in safeguarding Ukraine’s future.

Acknowledging the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the conflict, which has led to widespread displacement and disrupted education, Zelenska continues to advocate for the well-being of Ukrainian children, both domestically and internationally. Her efforts include raising awareness about the forcible deportation of Ukrainian children by Russia from occupied territories, for which accountability is paramount in achieving a lasting resolution.

As Ukraine navigates through the complexities of war and displacement, Zelenska’s unwavering dedication to supporting the country’s children and advocating for justice serves as a beacon of hope during these challenging times.
