Zelensky’s future in doubt: Who might lead Ukraine next?

Could Volodymyr Zelensky step down? The question has been raised after a public argument with President Trump and Vice President JD Vance. It’s not the first time key figures have suggested this. Sen. Lindsey Graham and even Trump have questioned Zelenskyy’s future. Trump suggested Ukraine should hold elections. But Zelenskyy’s position remains strong. He insists he would only resign if Ukraine joined NATO. This is his firm stance. But who would take his place if he stepped down?

Zelenskyy’s uncertain future

Zelensky’s leadership has faced increasing scrutiny. Recently, he clashed with Trump and Vance in a televised exchange. This stirred speculation about his future. Trump has previously pushed for Ukrainian elections. But holding elections is not possible under Ukraine’s constitution during wartime. Martial law is in effect, and elections can’t take place. Zelenskyy’s approval remains high at 63%. Despite the pressure, he stands firm. He emphasized that Ukraine, like any other country, has the right to choose its leaders. His words were clear in a Fox News interview. However, the question remains—who could lead if Zelenskyy were to resign?

Vitali Klitschko: The Kyiv powerhouse

Vitali Klitschko is a strong contender. He’s the mayor of Kyiv and has held the position since 2014. Klitschko is a former boxing champion with a global reputation. He has a strong base of support in Kyiv. His leadership is recognized internationally. Recently, he visited Brussels to support Zelenskyy. He defended Ukraine’s president against attacks from Trump. Klitschko even warned against holding elections during wartime. He believes it could harm Ukraine internally. The country faces huge threats from Russia. Klitschko’s experience and international recognition make him a powerful candidate. His supporters see him as a unifying figure. Could he step in if Zelenskyy steps down? Many believe he could.

Ruslan Stefanchuk: The Parliament leader

Ruslan Stefanchuk, Ukraine’s Parliament chairman, is another potential leader. He’s a close ally of Zelenskyy and has shown unwavering support. However, he has opposed the idea of holding elections during the war. Recently, Stefanchuk posted on Facebook. He argued that Putin, not Ukraine, should face real elections. For Stefanchuk, Ukraine’s focus must be on defense, not elections. His strong stance against elections reflects his commitment to Ukraine’s security. He believes Ukraine’s sovereignty must come first. While Stefanchuk is loyal to Zelenskyy, his leadership could emerge in a time of crisis. His position as Parliament chairman places him in a prime position.

Kyrylo Budanov: The military strategist

Kyrylo Budanov is another possible leader. He’s the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence agency. Budanov holds a high trust rating, even surpassing Zelenskyy’s. His popularity is based on his military expertise. He has led Ukraine’s efforts against Russian aggression. Budanov has not expressed a desire to run for office. But his credibility is undeniable. He’s a key figure in Ukraine’s intelligence community. Recently, he expressed confidence in Ukraine’s future. He believes a peace deal with Russia is possible. He said, “I think it is going to happen.” Budanov’s optimistic outlook gives hope for peace. His trust among Ukrainians makes him a serious contender. Could he lead Ukraine toward peace and stability?

General Valery Zaluzhny: A military hero

General Valery Zaluzhny is a name that keeps coming up. He served as Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. His leadership during the war has earned him widespread respect. Zaluzhny has a strong reputation. He was recently appointed as Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK. His popularity is high, with 80% of Ukrainians trusting him. Even though he was dismissed from his military role in 2024, his reputation remains intact. A recent survey showed that in a hypothetical runoff, Zaluzhny and Zelenskyy were tied. Zaluzhny is known for his calm leadership and military expertise. Would he be willing to step into the presidency? He has not made any statements on the matter. But his credibility could make him a top choice if Zelenskyy steps down.

The path forward for Ukraine

Ukraine is at a crossroads. The country faces immense challenges as the war with Russia continues. Zelenskyy’s leadership is crucial, but what if he steps aside? Each potential leader brings something different to the table. Klitschko has international appeal and local support. Stefanchuk has strong ties to Zelenskyy and a focus on security. Budanov is a trusted military leader with a vision for peace. Zaluzhny has the military experience and the respect of the people. Each of these leaders has what it takes to guide Ukraine through these difficult times. The future of Ukraine depends on strong leadership. Whether it’s Klitschko, Stefanchuk, Budanov, or Zaluzhny, one of them could be the next leader of Ukraine. The country needs a leader who can unite the people and defend the nation.
