LAS VEGAS — In a Sunday night game against the Vegas Golden Knights, New Jersey Devils’ goalie Jacob Markstrom returned to action after being out for over five weeks. Despite his efforts, the Devils were defeated 2-0, with Markstrom conceding two power-play goals in the third period.
Markstrom had been unable to play since January 22, due to a knee ligament strain, which also caused him to miss representing Sweden in the 4 Nations Face-Off. Reflecting on his time back on the ice, Markstrom expressed his mixed feelings, noting the frustration of not clinching a victory but appreciating the return to play.
In the game, Markstrom showcased his skills by stopping 22 shots, including a critical glove save against Brett Howden’s backhand attempt with just over two minutes remaining in the second period, keeping the score tied at zero at that point. Coach Sheldon Keefe praised Markstrom’s performance, remarking that he played as though he hadn’t been absent, attributing his success to his diligent preparation.
Having been taken off injured reserve lists, Markstrom replaced fellow goalie Nico Daws, who was reassigned to the minors. At 35 years old, Markstrom has built a solid season record, boasting a 21-10-5 scoreline, with a .912 save percentage and 2.19 goals-against average.
Markstrom stated, “I’ve worked hard on my conditioning and strength over the past five and a half weeks, and I felt strong during the game. However, the ultimate aim is to prevent goals, something I’ll strive harder for in future games.”
