Suspect who shot Virginia deputy killed in hospital, according to prosecutor.

The individual who was accused of fatally shooting a sheriff’s deputy in southwest Virginia and injuring another deputy earlier this month has passed away in a Tennessee hospital, as confirmed by a local prosecutor. Timothy Wayne Goodman, 65, from North Carolina, died on Friday at Johnson City Medical Center, based on information from Smyth County Commonwealth’s Attorney Phillip Blevins.

Goodman had been facing charges of aggravated murder in connection to the death of Smyth County Deputy Hunter Reedy on August 9th, along with four counts of attempted murder and the use of a firearm in a felony. The second deputy from Smyth County, who was wounded in the incident, was discharged the day after the incident and is currently recuperating at home.

Following the exchange of gunfire with the deputies, Goodman was hospitalized after sustaining gunshot wounds himself. Blevins stated in a press release that Goodman’s death marks the end of a significant chapter in the case, but emphasized their ongoing dedication to supporting Deputy Reedy’s family, the other officers involved, and the law enforcement community.

Reports indicate that the shootings occurred during a traffic stop involving Reedy and police officers in Marion. An investigation by the Virginia State Police revealed that Goodman was engaged in a confrontation with Marion officers and the deputies prior to the incident.

The funeral for Deputy Reedy, 28, who attended high school in Chilhowie and served as a police officer there before joining the sheriff’s department, was set to take place on Saturday at a church in Chilhowie. Reedy was married and had three children.
