Protesters supporting Palestine cause disruptions on opening night of Toronto Film Festival

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators caused a disturbance during the first showing at the Toronto International Film Festival by shouting “Stop the genocide!” amid the introductory comments. The disruption occurred at the premiere of the David Gordon Green comedy film “Nutcrackers” on Thursday evening at the Princess of Wales Theatre. Four protesters moved through the center aisle with signs and flashlights, voicing their disapproval of festival sponsor Royal Bank of Canada and calling for the bank to sever ties. Festival director Cameron Bailey attempted to restore order as the protesters interrupted, emphasizing the festival’s commencement, while some audience members booed the demonstrators. The protest lasted a brief period before security escorted the participants out, with several attendees recording and sharing videos of the incident online.

The festival representatives did not provide a statement in response to requests for comment. On the other hand, RBC issued a statement expressing respect for individuals’ right to protest while expressing disappointment that activist groups were diverting attention from the festival’s cultural significance. The bank noted the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Israel and Gaza, acknowledging the significant impact on those affected. Last year, a group named RBC Off Screen protested the film festival’s partnership with RBC, raising concerns about the bank’s support of the oil and gas sector. Notable figures like Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, and Joaquin Phoenix were among the signatories of an open letter urging TIFF to reconsider its association with RBC.
