Poll shows Americans split on Trump’s early presidency moves

President Donald Trump has begun his second term with sweeping actions aimed at shrinking the federal government, but a Washington Post-Ipsos poll shows a mixed public response. While 43% support his decisions, 48% disapprove, with strong opposition outpacing strong approval.

Majority believe Trump has overstepped

A striking 57% of Americans believe Trump has exceeded his authority since returning to office. The president has aggressively cut government programs and given entrepreneur Elon Musk control over major restructuring efforts, a move that has fueled controversy. Critics worry about conflicts of interest, while supporters praise efforts to curb government waste.

Immigration policies see the most support

Trump’s immigration policies are his most popular initiative, with 51% supporting mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. However, approval drops when it comes to deporting those who arrived as children or have lived in the U.S. for over a decade.

Musk’s management of government efficiency has drawn negative reactions, with only 34% approving of his work. Many Americans (63%) worry about his team’s access to sensitive data, and a majority oppose his decision to unilaterally shut down federal agencies.

Economy remains a concern

Despite economic issues playing a key role in Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris, 73% of Americans rate the economy as “not so good” or “poor.” Tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China are widely unpopular, with most believing they will raise prices.

Most unpopular action: pardoning January 6 rioters

Trump’s decision to pardon individuals convicted in connection to the January 6 Capitol riot is his least popular action, with over 80% opposing pardons for violent offenders. Even nonviolent offenders receive majority disapproval.

Courts and Congress may be obstacles

More than 80% of Americans believe Trump should comply with court rulings if they determine his actions are illegal. However, a majority believe congressional Republicans will side with him rather than acting as a check on his power.

With ongoing lawsuits and mounting opposition to his governing style, Trump’s approval remains below 50%—better than when he left office in 2021, but still highly divisive.
