In Moriches, New York, authorities and a local middle school are investigating how a student came into possession of marijuana-infused gummies and distributed them to approximately a dozen fellow students, resulting in 11 being hospitalized.
The incident unfolded on Monday morning at William Floyd Middle School, situated in the Long Island area. The affected students, aged 13 and 14, were taken to hospitals, according to Suffolk County police.
As of now, law enforcement has not disclosed further details regarding the origin of these cannabis edibles. It remains uncertain whether the student who shared them was aware of their drug content.
As of Tuesday morning, there’s been no update on the medical status of the hospitalized students, although the William Floyd School District announced on Monday that one more student had left school with family members.
Currently, no criminal charges have been filed, and it is unclear if the involved students will face any disciplinary actions.
This situation echoes similar occurrences in other parts of the United States in recent years, including instances in California and Connecticut. Notably, one such situation in California involved young elementary school students mistaking drug-laced edibles for regular candy.
