BUDAPEST, Hungary — Charles Leclerc has expressed confidence in Fred Vasseur’s leadership after Ferrari announced a new contract for the team principal amid speculations about his job security.
The Ferrari team revealed Vasseur’s contract on Thursday, signaling a vote of confidence in his abilities as the team principal despite their ongoing struggle to secure a victory in the 2025 Formula 1 season. Leclerc, reflecting on the situation, emphasized the need for time and stability to build a successful team. He noted that the buzz surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s recent arrival at Ferrari, coupled with their near miss in last year’s constructors’ championship, had heightened expectations.
Leclerc highlighted Vasseur’s distinct qualities, appreciating his sense of humor and his steady, unemotional approach amidst pressure. “The emotional intensity at Ferrari is significant, but Fred’s ability to maintain his emotions and focus on the bigger picture is pivotal,” Leclerc remarked.
Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari disclosed that Vasseur’s new contract spans several years, although specific details were not provided. Notably, Hamilton, Leclerc’s teammate, endorsed Vasseur earlier, countering Italian media rumors questioning Vasseur’s future. Since October, Ferrari has not secured a race win, and both Hamilton and Leclerc have yet to consistently contest with McLaren’s frontrunners this season.
Benedetto Vigna, Ferrari’s chief executive, expressed in a statement, “Today’s decision acknowledges our accomplishments and sets a commitment to future goals. It mirrors our confidence in Fred’s leadership — confidence built on shared objectives and defined responsibilities. Our pursuit of performance excellence remains relentless.”
Vasseur, who took on the role of Ferrari team principal in early 2023, has been influential in the sport for years. He previously managed Lewis Hamilton in the junior series during the 2000s, eventually persuading him to depart Mercedes and join Ferrari for the 2025 season, a move that stirred the Formula 1 community. Vasseur’s experience extends to previous stints with Renault and Sauber in the Formula 1 arena.
Although Hamilton is yet to achieve a podium finish since his transition to Ferrari, he has been actively engaging with top executives, advocating for upgrades and input in the development of the team’s 2026 car, coinciding with significant regulatory changes anticipated next year.
Expressing his gratitude for Ferrari’s continued confidence, Vasseur declared, “This contract renewal represents not just confirmation but also a challenge to keep advancing, maintain our dedication, and deliver on expectations. Over the last 30 months, we’ve established a robust groundwork, and it’s crucial we build upon it consistently. We understand the ambitions ahead and are united in our commitment to achieving them.”
As the race at the Hungaroring approaches, Leclerc tempered expectations about his performance. Despite its resemblance to Monaco’s racing track, he admitted it has historically been one of his least favorable circuits.
