In a significant development from Miami Gardens, Florida, the Miami Dolphins are set to face the upcoming 2025 season without their starting cornerback, Kader Kohou. During practice on Saturday, Kohou sustained a knee injury, ruling him out for the entirety of the season.
Head coach Mike McDaniel conveyed on Wednesday morning that Kohou will be placed on injured reserve. Previously undrafted, Kohou had rapidly risen through the ranks to secure a starting position with the team. The injury occurred during a one-on-one practice session with receiver Tyreek Hill, where Kohou was seen clutching his right knee. Despite the alarming scene, he managed to leave the field with minimal assistance.
“Kader’s journey into the league is nothing short of inspiring, transforming from an undrafted player to a key member of our squad,” McDaniel expressed. “This year, he was poised for an impressive ascent in his career, aiming to refine his skills. His setback is undeniably disappointing, but his resilience and mindset have been a source of strength for both himself and the team.”
Having joined the Dolphins in 2022, Kohou has notably tallied 180 tackles, one sack, and three interceptions over three seasons. This loss is a heavy hit to Miami’s defense, which has undergone major restructuring since last season, losing multiple star players including All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey and safety Jevon Holland.
In response to these transformations, Miami recently contracted veteran cornerback Mike Hilton to potentially fill the gap in the slot position. Additionally, to compete for a spot as an outside cornerback, former cornerbacks of the Raiders and Patriots, Jack Jones, was signed to the team. Other candidates for the boundary positions include the seasoned Kendall Sheffield, the youthful Cam Smith, and newcomer Storm Duck.
Coach McDaniel feels confident in the current roster of cornerbacks, emphasizing the depth available but has not entirely dismissed the idea of bringing more experience into the squad if necessary. “Should there be a circumstance in the coming weeks where the situation requires additional support, I am certain that general manager Chris Grier and I will address it promptly,” added McDaniel.
Furthermore, Miami will be temporarily deprived of safety Ashtyn Davis, following a noncontact injury sustained in practice earlier this week. The severity of Davis’s injury is currently being assessed, but optimistic projections suggest it will not be a season-ending issue.
