Reveille X, the revered rough collie mascot of Texas A&M University, recently underwent surgery to remove her right eye following a glaucoma diagnosis. President Mark A Welsh III shared this news on Wednesday, expressing that the operation was conducted due to symptoms of discomfort and cloudiness in the eye, which raised concerns among the veterinary team. Observing unusual tissue development, the decision was made to surgically remove the eye as a preventive measure.
“Fortunately, I am pleased to announce that Miss Rev has successfully come through the procedure and has already been discharged. She is now recovering comfortably,” commented Welsh.
The tradition of the Reveille mascot dates back to 1931 when Texas A&M cadets adopted an injured dog found near the campus. The dog, known for barking when buglers played the morning reveille, became the beloved mascot. Reveille X, having taken on this cherished role in 2021, continues the legacy. She is often seen being transported around the campus in a specialized golf cart fondly referred to as “Rev Force One.”
President Welsh noted that Reveille will be taking some time off from her usual duties while she recuperates. The veterinary team anticipates a full recovery, allowing her to resume her routine, which includes riding on Rev Force One, attending classes, supporting the Aggies, and overseeing campus activities, especially the antics of local squirrels, by this fall.
In a recent update, the classification of the mascot’s breed was corrected. Reveille X is a rough collie, not a border collie as previously reported.
