SILVERSTONE, England — George Russell remains optimistic about his future with the Mercedes Formula 1 team, dismissing recent talks of potential shifts in the lineup involving Max Verstappen. Ahead of the British Grand Prix, Russell expressed confidence that he would remain with Mercedes, emphasizing the potential risks of altering the team’s driver roster amid significant regulatory changes anticipated in 2026.

Last week, Russell made headlines during an interview with Sky Sports, hinting at ongoing discussions with reigning F1 champion Verstappen as a factor in the delay of renewing his contract beyond 2025. This sparked intrigue regarding the strategic decisions being considered by Mercedes.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff refrained from rejecting the idea of pursuing Verstappen, sparking speculation about the Dutch driver’s future plans post-2025 as he remains tight-lipped about his current stint with Red Bull.

Expressing his desire to remain with Mercedes, Russell stated, “I want to continue with Mercedes into the future. Toto has always held up his end of our agreements, but his duties extend to ensuring the best for the team. This includes decisions that affect not only me but the entire workforce at Mercedes.”

Russell sought to alleviate any concerns regarding his status, saying, “I believe I won’t be going anywhere. The identity of my teammate doesn’t change my focus; my priority is always the driving.”

He added, “I’m committed to Mercedes and firmly believe everything will sort itself out. The chances of me not being a part of Mercedes next year are very slim.”

Russell highlighted the uncertainties surrounding the impending changes in F1 rules, suggesting that continuity remains the best strategy for success. “Given the unknowns we’re facing next year, the best chance of remaining competitive is by staying the course,” Russell noted.

Currently ranked fourth in the F1 standings, Russell delivered Mercedes its sole victory of the season at the Canadian Grand Prix. He is partnered with 18-year-old rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli, whose debut season performance has been noteworthy.

When asked about his future commitments, Verstappen remained elusive, declining to divulge any information regarding his aspirations beyond his ongoing affiliation with Red Bull through 2028. Similarly, he did not comment on the matter of potential performance-related clauses that might facilitate an exit from Red Bull.

While rumors circulate about his next move, Verstappen firmly dismissed the idea of temporarily stepping back from F1 to venture into other motorsport disciplines.
