PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks ended their four-game losing streak, clinching a 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night. The offense was powered by Alek Thomas, who excelled at the plate with three hits in as many attempts and scored twice. Ryne Nelson was a force on the mound, recording seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.
A pivotal moment occurred shortly after Nelson’s departure in the seventh inning, as Tyler Fitzgerald launched a drive just out of Thomas’ reach in center field, allowing two runs and evening the score at 2-2. However, Arizona responded in their half of the seventh when Geraldo Perdomo’s soft hit brought Thomas home for the leading run.
In the top of the eighth, a disputed fan interference call on Christian Koss’ deep hit to left-center led to a ground-rule double, but Arizona’s John Curtiss managed to strike out Rafael Devers to keep the Diamondbacks in control. Shelby Miller was brought in and successfully struck out Heliot Ramos.
Adding to their lead, Eugenio Suarez smashed a solo home run in the eighth inning, marking his 11th of the month. The Giants were unable to break their slump and extended their losing streak to three games.
Nelson’s strong outing included yielding only five hits and two earned runs, maintaining excellent control with no walks allowed. Curtiss picked up his first win of the year, while Miller secured his first-ever four-out save. Collectively, Arizona’s pitchers stifled the Giants’ top hitters, limiting them to a single hit in 12 at-bats with seven strikeouts.
San Francisco’s starting pitcher, Logan Webb, faced challenges but managed to strike out seven batters, surrendering three earned runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. During the contest, he conceded just his seventh home run of the season which was a notable two-run shot by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the sixth, putting Arizona ahead 2-0.
Tensions peaked in the ninth when Giants manager Bob Melvin was ejected following an argument with the home plate umpire.
Looking ahead, Arizona plans to send right-hander Zac Gallen to the mound on Tuesday night. Gallen boasts significant success against the Giants, as he has emerged victorious in their last two encounters with an impressive 0.75 ERA. The Giants will counter with right-hander Hayden Birdsong, who is searching for his first win with a current ERA of 4.13.
