HOUSTON – Houston Astros’ shortstop Jeremy Peña was absent from the lineup on Saturday as he recovers from rib soreness that forced him to leave Friday’s game against the Chicago Cubs in the fifth inning, according to manager Joe Espada. Peña, who was struck by a pitch from Cade Horton in the second inning during the Astros’ 7-4 win, was initially able to continue playing for several innings before being substituted. Subsequent medical imaging confirmed that Peña did not suffer a fracture.

Manager Espada commented on Peña’s current condition, saying, “He is currently receiving treatment and will probably do some light hitting drills like swinging off a tee. I am striving to completely rest him today to offer him an entire day off since he’s actually feeling quite well.”

Throughout the season, Peña has demonstrated his durability by participating in the Astros’ initial 82 games. This season has been a standout for Peña, honored as the 2022 ALCS and World Series MVP, as he delivers an impressive .322 batting average, 11 home runs, and 40 RBIs, taking on the role of the leadoff hitter. His On-Base Plus Slugging (OPS) has reached .867, marking a substantial 166-point improvement from the previous year.
