SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Authorities revealed on Tuesday that a U.S. citizen, who had been detained and was facing deportation, was discovered deceased in her detention cell.
According to a statement from the General Directorate of Migration, the woman was apprehended in April due to a lack of identification documents. At the time of her arrest, officials noted that she exhibited symptoms that aligned with a psychotic disorder.
During the preceding week, using facial recognition technology, Dominican authorities were able to identify the woman and subsequently notified the U.S. Embassy of her identity.
The circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear, as officials disclosed that there were no apparent signs of violence upon discovering her body on Monday. The investigation continues to determine the cause of her untimely demise.
