PORTLAND, Ore. — Reilyn Turner and Pietra Tordin’s decisive goals led the Portland Thorns to a 2-0 triumph over the Washington Spirit on Sunday, bringing an end to the Spirit’s impressive five-game road winning streak that marked the season’s start.
The Thorns, now with a record of (5-3-4), continue their undefeated streak at Providence Park this season. This latest victory extends Portland’s unbeaten home record to eight consecutive matches stretching back to last year.
Olivia Moultrie skillfully crossed the ball to Jessie Fleming, who adeptly set up Turner for a goal in the 39th minute. Turner is currently leading the Thorns in goals scored this season, boasting a total of four.
Towards the end of the first half, there was concern for Thorns forward Caiya Hanks, who was tackled during a breakaway. She appeared to suffer a left knee injury, prompting immediate attention from the trainers before she was assisted off the field.
Portland is currently facing challenges with their lineup, missing key forwards Sophia Wilson, who is on maternity leave, and Morgan Weaver, who is sidelined for the season due to a right knee injury.
In the 82nd minute, after an impressive save by Thorns goalkeeper Bella Bixby blocking a shot from Makenna Morris, Tordin seized the moment to score, solidifying the 2-0 lead.
The Spirit, holding a record of (7-4-1), have yet to secure a victory at Providence Park in 15 visits.
Spirit forward Trinity Rodman, acclaimed for being part of the U.S. team that clinched gold at last summer’s Paris Olympics alongside Wilson, continues to be out of action as she contends with a back injury.
