SANDY, Utah — On a crisp Saturday night, Real Salt Lake emerged victorious against D.C. United, ending their frustrating seven-game winless streak with a 2-0 triumph. The match featured a notable lineup with Johnny Russell and 18-year-old Zavier Gozo both finding the back of the net.

Johnny Russell, playing in his debut season for Real Salt Lake, put them ahead in the 23rd minute. Having joined the club in April after a successful stint with Kansas City where he netted 60 goals in seven seasons, Russell showcased his skill by receiving a long pass from Diogo Goncalves. After maneuvering past a defender near the right corner, he expertly placed the ball into the net, marking his first goal for the team and giving RSL a 1-0 advantage. The 35-year-old played his part well before he was substituted at the break for the young 17-year-old talent, Aiden Hezarkhani, making only his second MLS appearance.

As the match progressed, Zavier Gozo capitalized on a strong setup. In the 77th minute, Alexandros Katranis launched a precise long ball that allowed Gozo to break free from the defensive ranks, where he skillfully angled the ball past D.C. United’s goalkeeper, Luis Barraza, securing a 2-0 lead for Salt Lake. Rafael Cabral had a commendable game between the posts for Salt Lake, making a crucial save and earning his fourth shutout of the season. The team dominated possession with 58% control, and their offensive prowess was evident as they outshot D.C. United 19-8, with seven of those on target.

For D.C. United, it was yet another disappointing outing. Following their disheartening 7-1 defeat to Chicago the previous weekend, the team struggled to regain form, with Barraza registering five saves but unable to stop Salt Lake’s persistent attacks. This recent setback leaves D.C. United with just a single win from their last eight encounters, reflecting a challenging period for the team.
