MILWAUKEE — In a rare and exciting moment during Saturday’s game, brothers Willson and William Contreras made history by becoming only the second pair of siblings in modern baseball history to hit home runs in the same inning while playing for opposing teams.
In the final inning of the St. Louis Cardinals’ 8-5 triumph over the Milwaukee Brewers, the duo achieved this impressive feat, thereby halting the Cardinals’ frustrating six-game losing streak.
Willson Contreras contributed to his team’s effort with a significant solo home run to right-center field, marking his ninth of the season and extending St. Louis’ lead to 8-4 in the top of the ninth. Not to be outdone, William Contreras started the bottom of the inning with authority, launching his sixth homer of the season into left field.
This impressive sibling achievement mirrors a historic event last witnessed on July 19, 1933, when brothers Rick and Wes Ferrell managed to deliver this unique accomplishment. On that occasion, Rick’s home run for the Boston Red Sox came at the expense of his brother Wes, who played for the Cleveland Indians.
After his noteworthy hit, Willson Contreras glanced at the Brewers’ dugout but refrained from exchanging any words as he completed his trip around the bases.
Expressing a competitive spirit, William Contreras remarked, “When we’re out there during the game, it’s not exactly like we’re family members. We’re out there competing. If there’s something to be discussed between him and anyone else, they do it. But yeah, we’re out there to compete and he’s playing his game and we’re playing ours.”
The last occurrence of brothers homering in the same inning on opposing sides involved Josh and Bo Naylor of the Cleveland team on April 10, 2024.
