WOLFSBURG, Germany — In a strategic move, Wolfsburg announced on Thursday the appointment of Paul Simonis as their new head coach. This decision comes on the heels of Simonis’ remarkable achievement with Go Ahead Eagles, where he led the team to a Dutch Cup victory.

The 40-year-old Simonis has signed a two-year contract, tasked with revitalizing VfL Wolfsburg and injecting new energy into the team, according to the club’s managing director for sport, Peter Christiansen. Simonis’ accomplishments with the Go Ahead Eagles were particularly noteworthy; he nabbed a cup win in April, ending a trophy drought for the club that spanned over nine decades, and resulted in an impressive seventh-place finish in the league.

Simonis takes over from Ralph Hasenhüttl, who was dismissed from his position with only two games remaining in the Bundesliga season. Under interim coach Daniel Bauer, Wolfsburg concluded their campaign in 11th place. Simonis is set to become the sixth permanent coach for the club since 2021, when Wolfsburg last qualified for the prestigious men’s Champions League.
