MINNEAPOLIS — In a decisive display of power, Byron Buxton launched a 479-foot home run on Wednesday night, contributing to the Minnesota Twins’ 6-2 triumph over the Texas Rangers. This impressive three-run shot, which was the second-longest in Major League Baseball this season, came off of a pitch from Rangers’ starter Jack Leiter. The ball majestically landed in the second deck of the center field, marking the longest home run of Buxton’s career, which so far includes 144 home runs.
Reflecting on the hit, Buxton grinned and commented, “That’s big boy status. I ain’t going to lie. I knew that was a good one.” This season, only Mike Trout has recorded a longer home run, sending a 484-foot ball flying for the Los Angeles Angels in April. As a result of this notable achievement, Buxton ascended to 15th place on the Twins’ all-time career home run list, surpassing Hall of Famer Joe Mauer. The colossal home run is also recognized as the fifth-longest in Target Field history since its opening in 2010, with teammates heaping praise on Buxton’s remarkable performance.
“He’s really got pop,” claimed Willi Castro, the Twins’ left fielder who added to the team’s score with a two-run triple during the game. “He’s one of the best players in the league. As soon as he hit, the sound of the bat, I knew it was gone.” Prior to his monumental home run, Buxton thrilled the audience with a sensational diving catch in center field, cutting off a potential hit from Marcus Semien, which secured the third out of the inning. This athletic feat earned him a standing ovation from the appreciative fans at Target Field.
Twins manager Rocco Baldelli lauded Buxton’s outstanding performance of the night, labeling it “mesmerizing” and hinting it would be a lasting memory for those present. “Pat on the back to everyone who was at the ballpark tonight to be able to watch what he did out there. One of the more mesmerizing performances that you’ll ever see on a field,” Baldelli remarked. Buxton, who recently returned from a concussion-related absence, has achieved impressive stats in the ten games following his comeback. He maintains a .350 batting average, 14 RBIs, and three stolen bases, with his home run tally now leading the Twins.
