In an upcoming face-off slated for next month, Fiji’s rugby team has unveiled a robust 32-man squad to compete in tests against powerhouse teams Australia and Scotland. Making notable waves is former Super Rugby standout, Salesi Rayasi, who is set to be a part of this dynamic lineup.

Rayasi, a seasoned 28-year-old winger, has previously showcased his skills during a six-year tenure with the Wellington Hurricanes in Super Rugby. Presently, he plies his trade with Vannes in France’s prestigious Top 14 league. Initially part of the New Zealand sevens circuit, he has pivoted to play for Fiji, following in the footsteps of his father, Felipe, who earned 13 caps for Fiji throughout the 1990s.

Australia will encounter Fiji in Newcastle on July 6, marking their sole preparatory match before embarking on a three-test series against the formidable British and Irish Lions. Subsequently, on July 12, Fiji is set to host Scotland in Suva in what promises to be another thrilling encounter.

Mick Byrne, the head coach for Fiji, emphasized the strength of their upcoming opponents, both ranked as Tier One rugby nations. “We understand the intense level of play required against these teams,” Byrne asserted while announcing the squad. He highlighted that the selected team illustrates Fiji’s deep bench and rugby prowess, promising performances that will inspire pride across the Fijian fans.

In crafting the squad, selections included 13 players from the Fijian Drua who participated in Super Rugby this season, alongside ten stalwarts based in France. “We’ve focused on building synergies that offer tactical flexibility while maintaining our distinctive Fijian flair,” Byrne explained. He added that victory is vital, yet achieving it with their own unique style is paramount.

The full lineup for Fiji features a skilled mix of forwards and backs, poised to represent their nation. Key forwards include Eroni Mawi, Luke Tagi, and Mesake Doge, while the backs comprise talented players like Simione Kuruvoli and the aforementioned Salesi Rayasi. With such a strong team, Fiji is gearing up to face challenging matches with high hopes and fervent support from their rugby enthusiasts.
